The May 2020 issue of British Vogue was created prior to the pandemic which has subsequently brought the world almost to a halt. In any case, we couldn’t imagine a better cover star than @BadGalRiri, an advocate for tolerance whose rallying cry has redefined every industry she’s turned her hand to, and whose generous spirit saw her make a $5 million donation to fight Covid-19 with her @ClaraLionelFdn earlier this month. Într-o discuție cu Afua Hirsch, Rihanna a vorbit despre ce înseamnă pentru ea viața în Londra, dar și despre lupta cu rasismul.

Metropola britanică i-a devenit casă în ultimi trei ani, iar cântăreața dezvăluie că iubește anonimatul pe care-l simte pe străzi, în aglomerația din Londra, oamenii fiind prea „ocupați pentru a le păsa de mine”.

Viața în Londra i-a oferit o altă perspectivă asupra luptei contra rasismului și a nedreptății : „Cred că brutalitatea poliției este extrem de severă în America, dar rasismul este viu peste tot”.

Rihanna a povestit că imigranții guyanezi erau foarte nepopulari în Barbados, locul unde ea a crescut, „așa că din aceasta cauză ma raportez la și empatizez cu cei din Mexic, cu latinii, care sunt discriminați în America”.

„Știu cum este să vină cei de la imigrări în casa ta, în mijlocul nopții și să înceapă să scoată oamenii afară”.

„Nu e vorba de mama, mama mea avea acte legale,” a clarificat ea, „dar să spunem că știu ce înseamnă asta. Am fost martoră la așa ceva, am trăit astfel de momente”, a mărturisit artista.

Vogue a explicat că a fost dorința artistei să poarte durag pe cap, pe coperta revistei, și l-a anunțat pe editorul-șef Edward Enninful încă de la primele ore despre ideea ei.

Enninful a scris în editorialul său: „Mi-am imaginat vreodată că voi vedea un durag pe coperta Vogue? Nu, dragă cititorule, nu. Și iată că avem acum cel mai aspirațional și frumos durag. Încântător. E nevoie de o persoană cu o carismă extraordinară să ofere un astfel de moment”.

Duragul era folosit în anii sclaviei pentru a suprima frumusețea femeilor afro-americane și pentru a le scoate în evidență statutul. Astazi este o celebrare a culturii afro-americane.
